- Description
- Project Title: SPRNCA Structural Pruning of Two (2) Cottonwood Trees Background: BLM, in cooperation with the non-profit volunteer group Friends of the San Pedro River, operates a contact station and bookstore known as the San Pedro House within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA) located approximately eight (8) miles east of Sierra Vista, Arizona along Arizona State Route 90. There are two (2) very large cottonwood trees within this site which have not had routine care. The heavy tree limbs are a hazard in the public recreation area and each of these trees has dropped limbs. The BLM has experienced property damage to the San Pedro House and another unused building as a result of the heavy limbs falling. BLM procured Arborist Services as a first step in mitigating this hazard. Tree health and risk assessments were performed by qualified individuals using industry established processes to establish and quantify the scope of required tree pruning for these two (2) trees. This recreation site is managed by BLM SPRNCA and Tucson Field Offices collocated in Tucson, Arizona. The San Pedro House is determined not Eligible for Listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is occupied mainly during daylight hours as are the grounds encompassed by both tree crowns. The eastern cottonwood tree is southeast of and immediately adjacent to the contact station with a portion of the tree overhanging the building and has experienced a couple of recent limb drops that caused damage to the roof of the contact station. The western cottonwood tree is northwest of the contact station and has also experienced multiple limb drops. A portion of the western cottonwood overhangs site trails and the parking area; a fallen limb from this tree is weighing down on the roof of an unused building.
