- The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is part of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. The USAISR is dedicated to both laboratory and clinical trauma research. Its mission is to provide requirements-driven combat casualty care medical solutions and products for injured soldiers from self-aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations; provide state-of-the-art trauma, bum, and critical care to Department of Defense beneficiaries around the world and civilians in our trauma region; and provide Burn Special Medical Augmentation Response Teams. The Tactical Combat Casualty Care Research (TCCCR) task area addresses problems involving pre-hospital or point of injury issues such as hemorrhage, Tension pneumothorax, etc. These are common complications and continue to be a significant source of morbidity and mortality. The USAISR is currently funded to perform research to evaluate the most advanced and promising technologies using the most clinically relevant and stringent human, and animal models possible. Various pre-clinical models have been established and utilized to evaluate the use of new technologies in the aid of early diagnosis of these types of injuries and conditions. to include developing a human model for hemorrhage utilizing Lower Body Negative Pressure (LBNP). There have also been various animal models for hemorrhage and tension pneumothorax.
