- Description
- Tank Closure Cesium Removal EOI/Draft RFP Savannah River Remediation LLC (SRR) is currently contracted to operate the liquid waste (LW) system at the Savannah River Site (SRS) under prime contract DE‐AC09‐09SR22505. The LW system consists of several facilities to safely receive, store, treat, and permanently dispose radioactive waste. The waste in the storage tanks may be classified into two broad general radioactive waste categories, high level waste (HLW) and low level waste (LLW), present in three forms: supernatant, sludge, and salt. Salt contains salt crystals (which form after the evaporated supernatant is cooled), and entrapped interstitial supernatant liquid. The sludge, primarily insoluble oxides, is dispositioned directly through vitrification in the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). The salt is treated to remove strontium, actinides, and cesium resulting in decontaminated salt solution (DSS) or LLW fraction disposed through the Saltstone Production Facility (SPF), and a HLW fraction disposed through vitrification in DWPF. Salt waste is currently being treated in the Actinide Removal Process/Modular Caustic Side Solvent Extraction Unit, and this waste material will also be treated in the Salt Waste Processing Facility. The mission of SRR is to treat and stabilize LW and close the older style LW tanks. Acceleration of tank closure is required to meet the Federal Facilities Agreement (FFA) commitments between DOE and the state of South Carolina. Closure of older style tanks starts with the bulk waste removal efforts. A cesium removal process to support bulk waste removal efforts is needed to support and accelerate tank closure.
