- Description
- P15PS00906 Klondike Gold Rush White Pass Survey Amendment 000002 This amendment is issued in response to questions from potential offerors for the subject solicitation. The closing date of the solicitation has not changed and remains the same. Q1: Amendment 1 states that no helicopter use is allowed for this project. Helicopter flight services do routinely fly in this area to transport tourists and deposit slingloads of cargo. Presuming some duration of remote living during fieldwork for this project, it would be logistically difficult or impossible to carry spike camp gear overland along the rugged White Pass Trail route to a chosen camp location. Apart from a mule train, the only reasonable means of transporting camp gear is with slingloads. Given all this, can KLGO amend Amendment 1 to allow helicopter transport for this project? A1: In response to helicopter use during the White Pass scope of work project; it is not out of the question however there are some stipulations that will complicate the use of helicopters during this project. White Pass city, which is one of the few flat locations along the White Pass Trail route has never been surveyed for helicopter landing or drop sites. Collectively, it has had very limited survey work completed for resource protection therefore landing a helicopter or dropping sling loads into this site may damage the resources which are the focus of this survey. In lieu of this fact, no helicopter use will be permitted with in the survey area which could cause damage to the resources. Temsco which is a local helicopter charter company has a landing area which is located in the White Pass valley and provides access to the Laughton Glacier. However, due to its location in the valley, a difficult technical hike and a river crossing would have to be undertaken to access the White Pass site. Due to no landing or drop zones within the site and responsible actions taken to limit the amount of low level flights affecting wildlife habitat, this could be the only landing zone available, yet it is an option for gear transport logistics. The White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad runs along the valley and makes a similar stop to access the Laughton Glacier which is in fact how the Helicopter tours return to Skagway after arriving at that point. They also transport people and equipment to the same location. Although logistics will be difficult for this project whatever means are utilized, helicopter operations at this Temsco site are not out of the question, however there are other options for gear and team transport. ////////End of Amendment///////////
