- Description
- Power Africa Trade Africa (PATA) addresses one of the most pressing challenges to sustainable economic growth and development in sub-Saharan Africa – the access to electrical power. More than 69 percent of the population of sub-Saharan Africa has no access to electricity including more than 85 percent in rural areas. PATA works to bridge the gap between Africa’s power shortage and its economic potential by working with African Governments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and other private sector and U.S. Government (USG) partners to increase power generation and transmission and to expand the reach of mini-grid and off-grid solutions for rural communities. The Deputy Chief of Operations works with the Chief of Operations on planning and ensuring the appropriate levels of management internal support for all aspects of PATA operations in the principal locations of Washington, D.C, Nairobi, Kenya, and Pretoria, South Africa, and to a lesser extent in the PATA focus countries of Tanzania, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, and Nigeria. The Deputy Chief of Operations also has responsibility for working with partner USG agencies to negotiate agreements on personnel and to ensure appropriate resourcing and support. PATA is one of the Administration’s most ambitious initiatives and involves 10 budgets, 12 USG agencies, 10 countries, and multiple partners with the initial goal of doubling Sub-Saharan Africa’s access to electricity. The White House designated USAID as the lead among the agencies that contribute to the Initiative and President Obama committed $7 billion in grants and financing in addition to $14 billion in private sector investment in PATA. The Deputy Chief of Operations will be extensively involved in controlling the management aspects of the interagency coordination including working with Human Resource departments from various agencies to negotiate the terms of details or assignments that will result in technical expertise from other agencies working on and/or being funded by PATA.
