- Description
- FIRE - National Environmental Protection Agency Subject Matter Expert Project A: Nationwide Environmental Assessment Development for Multi National Park Units The National Park Service (NPS) national and regional fire planning personnel (Planners) were tasked in late 2013 with reviewing the fire management planning process (including compliance) for all parks with burnable vegetation as defined by Reference Manual 18: Wildland Fire Management - National Park Service (NPS). The think-outside-the-box procedure and products that ensued was the breakdown of the National Park programs by fire workload. The Planners determined that this concept would allow for greater efficiencies and effectiveness for producing Fire management plans (FMP) and the supporting compliance documents. In the compliance discussion of the categories of parks, it was recognized that many of the smaller workload parks had burnable vegetation and therefore had to have a FMP. The development of a FMP precipitates needing to have a compliance document that satisfies the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Currently, there is not a Categorical Exclusion (CE) that would sufficiency cover many smaller workload parks, therefore, it is necessary to develop an EA to cover the smaller workload programs. Project B: New River Gorge National River (NERI) Environmental Assessment and Fire Management Plan Revision The NPS is required to have Fire Management Plans (FMPs) for all units with burnable vegetation as defined by Reference Manual 18: Wildland Fire Management - National Park Service (NPS). New River Gorge National River, Gauley River National Recreation Area and Bluestone National Scenic River are situated in Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas, and Summers Counties in southern West Virginia. These three units of the National Park System are administered by the National Park Service. Reference hereinafter to New River Gorge National River or NERI refers to all three units collectively. Project C: Writer/Editor for a Resource Advisor Guide The North Cascades National Park Service Complex (NOCA) includes North Cascades National Park, Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and Ross Lake National Recreation Area which covers approximately 684,000 acres. The NOCA Complex fire staff has realized that they would greatly benefit from a NOCA Complex specific Resource Advisor (READ) guide. The primary intent of the READ guide will be to serve as a resource for READs assigned to fire management activities at the NOCA, but it will also aid park fire management personnel in their daily operations.
