- Description
- Background NASA/GRC is hereby soliciting information for a velocimeter instrument, for the support of the GRC Two Phase Flow Separator Experiment (TPFSE) team. A velocimeter instrument is needed to measure fluid velocity profiles for the TPFSE. The test section is an optically transparent, acrylic cylindrical shell with an outer diameter of 3.5-inches, inner diameter of 3-inches, and wall thickness of 0.25-inches.The test fluids are breathing air and water, which are tangentially injected into the test section to create a vortex. The denser liquid is forced outward to walls of the test section creating a liquid layer and the less dense gas collects in the center forming a vortex. Specifications The velocity profile information needs to be measured in the liquid layer in both the axial and angular directions. These profiles shall be collected along a plane located 5 centimeters (1.97 inches) axially below the top of the test section. The measurement accuracy must be no greater than 5.0% of the measured value with a spatial resolution of 0.5mm, and the velocity profiles must be collected at a rate of at least 20 Hz. The velocimeter probe must be able to measure the velocity profiles without being intrusive to the fluid flow. The probe cannot come into contact with the test fluids and shall remain outside of test section. Thus, velocity measurements must be able to be taken through the optically transparent, 0.25-inch thick, test section wall. Physical space available for the instrument is limited. Therefore, the probe should be as small as possible, approximately 4-inches in length (or similar). The accompanying electronics box for the velocimeter should also be as small as possible, fitting within an approximate 6-inch cube. Additional Information The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center (GRC) is seeking capability statements for the requested velocimeter instrument which meets or exceeds the above mentioned specifications, from all interested parties regardless of business size or status, for the purposes of determining the appropriate level of competition. No solicitation exists; therefore, do not request a copy of the solicitation. If a solicitation is released, it is the potential offerors responsibility to monitor these sites for the release of any solicitation or synopsis. Vendors having the capabilities necessary to meet or exceed the stated requirements are invited to submit appropriate documentation, literature, brochures, and references. In addition to and in order to help determine the appropriate level of competition, responses should include the following: name and address of firm, CAGE code/DUNS number, and GSA contract number (if applicable) This request for information is for information and planning purposes only and is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government nor will the Government pay for information solicited.Respondents deemed fully qualified will be considered in any resultant solicitation for the requirement. Questions or comments regarding this RFI must be submitted in writing via e-mail, cite the RFI number, and be directed to the following Government representative: Name:Eric Hartman Email:Eric.T.Hartman@nasa.gov All responses shall be submitted to Eric Hartman no later than 4:00 pm EST on 8/18/2014. Please reference NNC140833RFI in any response. NASA Clause 1852.215-84, Ombudsman, is applicable. The Center Ombudsman for this acquisition can be found at http://prod.nais.nasa.gov/pub/p ub_library/Omb.html.
