- Description
- Implement the study "Strengthening TB and MDR/XDRTB surveillance in resource limited settings" by: a. Manufacturing and providing the new Colour Test for diagnosing MDR-TB for the study. b. Manufacturing and providing the new colour test for three new drugs: ethambutol, pyrazinamide (using nicotinamide as a pyrazinamide surrogate), and kanamycin to detect XDR-TB for the study. c. Assisting with the technical training at the research sites in both Iquitos and Lima to include the development of the standard operating procedure for the processing of the sputum and extra pulmonary samples (gastric aspirate, stool, urine and cerebro spinal fluid) collected for testing. d. Assisting in the logistical support at both the Lima and Iquitos site to include the shipping of samples to the TB lab at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima for testing. e. Perform and validate the testing of sputum and extra-pulmonary samples, as is appropriate for each sample collected within the study by comparing the Xpert® MTB/RIF assay (by Cephid, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA), the "Colour Test" (a colorimetric agar culture test), and the BACTEC TM Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) test (by Becton Dickinson Microbiology Systems, Sparks, MD, USA) with drug susceptibility testing (DST) when the MGIT is positive for M. tuberculosis. f. Perform up to 2 pilot technical assessment visits at sites. g. Hire a health care worker at Iquitos site to overview field procedures at this site (Medical Doctor is preferable). h. Assist in the preparation of scientific publications which are generated from this study. Estimated Budget: $120,000.00
