Description
Sources Sought Notice The United States Air Force, Energy and Environment (E2) Office located at Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB), Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (AFRL/RXSC) has an interest in determining whether a United States based equipment manufacturer(s) exists that can meet the Air Force's (AF) technical and engineering requirements cited in the Sources Sought Statement of Need. During the remanufacturing of military and aviation equipment thin liquid metal coatings are applied to various components using a technique called brush plating. One example is brush plating a thin film of Cadmium (Cd) on components such as landing gear, bushings or threaded parts installed on the aircraft. This thin layer of Cd provides a lubricious and/or corrosion resistant repair of worn or damaged metallic Cd coatings. These operations are typically performed on aircraft in general purpose maintenance hangars not specifically designed for capture, process, and dispose of liquid solutions with heavy metal toxins. These operations can result in human exposure to hazardous liquid plating solutions during application, overhead operations can cause dripping, or uncontrolled flow down vertical surfaces. Excess or residual solutions on the surface must be properly contained and disposed of properly. As a result the current processes are facing increasing regulatory and operational restrictions.
