Description
Background: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a project to enable manufacturers to assess and assure robot system assembly task performance by delivering a methodology and tools for characterizing the performance of perception, mobility, dexterity, and safety components. The RFI focuses solely on the perception component of the project and is being used to gather market research for NIST to make decisions regarding the purchase of a commercially available perception system for use in manufacturing applications. Introduction: This is a Request for Information (RFI) only and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will take procurement action in this matter. Further, neither NIST nor the Government will be responsible for any cost incurred in furnishing this information. NIST has a project to enable manufacturers to assess and assure robot system assembly task performance by delivering a methodology and tools for characterizing the performance of perception, mobility, dexterity, and safety components. This RFI focuses solely on the perception component of the project and is being used to gather market research for NIST to make decisions regarding the purchase of a commercially available perception system for use in manufacturing applications. The perception system will be used for identifying and locating the positions (x, y, z) and orientations (roll, pitch, yaw) (poses) of manufactured parts such as automotive gears and pistons within a known coordinate frame. The pose will be used by a robot to pick and place the part as part of the assembly task. The parts of interest to NIST are rigid and each part should fit within a volume of 30 x 30 x 30 cm. In some cases, the parts may be metallic and shiny and in others they may be plastic and translucent. The vendor may submit information for systems that are applicable for certain types of parts or may submit information for systems that are applicable for a broad spectrum of parts. The perception system may be, but is not limited to, a camera-based machine vision system, a laser-based system, or a combination of both kinds of systems. Responding to this RFI: RFI responses must include: • Name of the primary point of contact for the response • Business title • Company affiliation • Email address • Phone • A brief summary (300 word limit) description of previous relevant experience with perception systems. RFI Questions: NIST is requesting responses to the following questions: 1. What technology(ies) does the perception system employ? 2. Do we have to purchase your sensor hardware or can we provide your own? 3. Does the perception system need to be integrated with a robot or can the system be used without a robot or other hardware? 4. Does the perception system only work with a particular robot (e.g., Kuka, Fanuc, ABB) or can it be integrated with any robot? 5. Does the perception system have to be mounted on a robot arm or external to the robot? 6. Can the perception system identify a part and measure its pose in real-time? How fast? 7. What is the pose measurement accuracy of the perception system (e.g., part position accuracy of ± 5 mm in x, y and z and part orientation accuracy of ± 1 degrees in roll, pitch and yaw)? 8. Can the perception system identify parts when: a. Different kinds of parts are on a planar surface and are isolated and separated from each other b. Different kinds of parts are on a planar surface and are in close proximity to each other c. Different kinds of parts are randomly arranged in a bin and occlude one another 9. Can the system measure the pose of a part when: a. Identical parts are on a planar surface and are isolated and separated from each other b. Identical parts are on a planar surface and are in close proximity to each other c. Identical parts are randomly arranged in a bin and occlude one another 10. What is output format of the results (e.g., (x, y, z, roll, pitch, yaw), matrix)? 11. What kinds of parts does the perception system work best for? For example, the system may work well for parts with matte surfaces or it may work well for curved parts. 12. What kinds of parts does the system work poorly for? For example, the system may have problems with shiny parts. 13. Software: a. What operating system(s) does the software run on? b. What is the user interface? c. Do you provide an application programming interface (API)? 14. How much training/re-programming is required to use the system with a new part? 15. Is the system extensible? 16. What applications has the system been used for? What types of parts were used in those applications? Response Submission Deadline: Responses to this RFI will be accepted up to 07 July 2014, at 4:00PM ET. RFI submissions will be accepted as email attachments only. All responses must be sent to Mimi Robinson at mimi.robinson@nist.gov, with "Perception System RFI Response" in the subject line. DISCLAIMER NIST will not publicly disclose proprietary information obtained as a result of this RFI. To the full extent that it is protected by law and regulations, information identified by a respondent as Proprietary or Confidential will be kept confidential.
