Description
Redacted J&A LPB Low Plasticity Burnishing (LPB) is a surface treatment capable of imparting a deep layer of thermally and mechanically stable high less than br greater than compressive residual stress (RS) in critical locations providing improved damage tolerance and increased component life. The LPB less than br greater than compressive stress field is designed for the application to cancel the applied tension and stress concentrations and is delivered as a less than br greater than turnkey solution tailored to the application. LPB processing is unique among surface enhancement methods, providing closed-loop process less than br greater than control exceeding Six Sigma, detailed records of the processing of each component, and the logistical advantage of processing using less than br greater than conventional CNC machine tools and robots in manufacturing or overhaul operations. less than br greater than LPB has been proven to mitigate damage mechanisms including foreign object damage (FOD), corrosion pitting, corrosion fatigue, stress less than br greater than corrosion cracking (SCC), fretting and stress concentrations to enhance the fatigue strength, damage tolerance and component life of a less than br greater than wide variety of alloys, including 4340 type steels. Therefore, design of an LPB solution is proposed, as defined by the following less than br greater than statement of work, to improve the component performance and life of cannon tubes. less than br greater than less than br greater than The main task is to develop an LPB process for the AISI 4335V steel cannon tube to mitigate fatigue cracking at the muzzle brake less than br greater than thread relief radii. The vendor shall conduct validation fatigue testing. It is anticipated that up to six (6) short section parts will less than br greater than be LPB processed and destructively tested during this program. Ultimately, once the LPB process is qualified through these tests, it is less than br greater than intended that a turnkey solution will be implemented through another program per US Army requirements.
