It is an integral component of the C-130 aircraft, but is supplemental equipment attached to the cargo floor to assist in the loading of heavy equipment cargo. The cargo winch assembly is primarily a sungear, clutch-controlled cable drum, driven, through chain and sprocket and planetary gear reduction, by an electric motor. When the motor assembly is running and the operating handle is in the normal position the clutch brake drum spins freely and no power is transmitted to the cable drum. When the operating handle is pulled away from the cable cover, the brake band is tightened around the brake drum and the cable drum starts to turn. A safety latch consisting of a lever, pawl, and ratchet is provided to lock the cable drum in the event of power or mechanical failure. The pawl is spring-loaded and is actuated manually by lightly pulling up on the lever. The spring holds the pawl in contact with the ratchet and locks the cable drum. The pawl is disengaged from the ratchet by pressing the lever down. Under load conditions, the pawl cannot be disengaged from the ratchet until the cable begins to retract. On the Model 41B Cargo Winch Assembly, a solenoid is energized when power is on. In the event of power failure, the solenoid is deenergized, engaging the pawl with the ratchet and locking the cable drum. Maintenance Repair Action: The maintenance required for this task is to repair the Cargo Winch and return to serviceable condition. Maintenance to be performed on the Cargo Winch includes, but is not limited to, teardown, analysis, overhaul, repair, testing, procurement of spare components, packaging, handling, storage, transportation, data collection, engineering support and services.
