- Description
- Background/Introduction The Office of Naval Research (ONR Code 322MS) has provided the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Physics Department with a fleet (8 total) of autonomous underwater gliders. ONR has also provided NPS with several new and advanced underwater acoustic and environmental sensors. ONR-322MS has tasked NPS with the management of these systems and the integration of these various sensors into these platforms for research and operational opportunities. However, the skill sets required to design and integrate the hardware and software necessary to complete this tasking does not reside at NPS. Scope The work includes the following major elements: Design, build, test, and integrate the hardware for the data acquisition (DAQ) system, and the software which is needed to run the hardware. The hardware will be COTS hardware from various vendors (e.g., PC104 computer board, A2D converters, GPS synchronized 10MHz oscillator), the combination of which is expected to be designed by the vendor but will be purchased by NPS. This will form the total hardware package of the DAQ system. Real-time embedded software and hardware control will need to be developed by the vendor. Design, create, test, and integrate the software which is needed to collect data from environmental sensors (AML Oceanographic SmartX sensors). The hardware will be acquired by NPS, while the vendor must develop the real-time embedded software and hardware control to extract the sensor ™s data into the DAQ. Technical support during sea-trials of the glider.
