- Description
- The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest will be soliciting for an Archeological Excavation at Site 10IH293 Solicitation # AG-02RC-S-13-0132. Solicitation should be posted the week of 8/19 and close approximately 20 days after posting. Award of this solicitation will be based on availability of funds after fire transfer. 1. DESCRIPTION OF WORK Contractor will be required to archaeologically excavate 40 shovel probes, and between 2 - 5 cubic meters of soil (using formal excavation units) within site 10IH293. The purpose of the work is to perform archaeological testing of that portion of the site disturbed by a weather related erosional event, and subsesquent road-work performed to fix an approximate 23-cubic meter gully eroded into the site. The approximate top 10cm of a large portion of the greater site area was removed by this road-work and used to fill the eroded gully. The archaeological testing would be focused on evaluating both the archaeological components remaining in the upper levels of the site as well as deeper levels. Based on an initial damage assessment performed at the site 2,383 flakes, 90 chipped and ground stone tools and 23kg of fire cracked rock were recovered by screening loose/slumped soil found within the erosional gully. That work was reported by Root and Ferguson (2009). The formal excavation units would be positioned to maximize the amount of data expected from the site based on the results from the 45 shovel probes. Formal mitigation would occur in an outyear (via separate contract - funding dependent) based on the data recovered from this archaeological testing program. Price quote should clearly indicate cost per cubic meter so that a definite amount can be ordered upon contract award. 2. PROJECT LOCATION Approximately 17 miles southwest of Elk City, Idaho. The site is located along the the Salmon River near the Whitewater Ranch. The site boundary can be accessed by a standard clearance 4x4 vehicle on a Forest Service road. It should be noted that the road is extremely busy during the fall hunting season. The greater site area is also used as a parking area for vehicles. Public interaction can be expected and logistical patience excersized for this contract.
