Description
Project Map Vicinity Map Solicitation The Santa Fe National Forest intends to award a firm-fixed price, 3-year Requirements Contract for Forest debris piling in the Rio Chama Prescribed Fire Project Area on the Coyote Ranger District. The first task order is for 370 acres. The areas where work will be done were harvested decades ago. Utilization standards were poor then and large quantities (20-40 tons per acre) of cull logs, tops and large diameter slash were left. This debris over the years has hardened and been transformed into "pitch wood", the rot resistant pitch laden heartwood characteristic of ponderosa pine. This pitch wood, when it burns, produces dense noxious smoke that is a hazard to wildland fire fighters engaged in either suppression or prescribed fire. Piling this pitch wood allows for its burning during times of year when the potential for fire spread is minimal and the amount ignited controlled at a level where smoke production is mitigated and fire fighter exposure reduced. The areas where piling will occur are on slopes less than 40% with the majority of the areas on slopes less than 20%. Road access is good. Most of the areas have been pre-commercially thinned and tree densities range between 200-400 trees per acre of varying size. Sound pieces of debris that are larger than five inches in diameter on the small end and longer than five feet shall be piled. A "sound" piece is defined as a segment of debris, a log, or top that maintains the majority of its integrity when picked up and lifted. Piles shall be constructed and located according to the contract specifications.
