- Description
- ARDF was developed in the 1990's to be a repository for information about mines, mineral prospects, and occurrences throughout Alaska for metallic and limited nonmetallic resources. It does not maintain records for energy resources or energy mineral resources (coal). This database is used internally for mineral resource assessment studies and mineral deposit research. It is designated as a 'mission-critical' database by the USGS. It is also used by the public, in particular the minerals industry, as one of the guides for mineral exploration. Since its establishment, the web site for the database has experienced more than two million hits and at present averages 300 to 400 hits per day. The database was originally built in part through the efforts of USGS staff and primarily through the efforts of a large number of experienced minerals industry contractors. After the initial construction stage, which took a number of years, we have strived to maintain the currency of the database by regular updates. The task upon which the incumbent will work is related to the maintenance of the Alaska Resource Data File (ARDF). Required activities require a well grounded understanding of geology of Alaska and well developed contacts within the mineral industry in Alaska. The primary responsibility of the task is to assist in the compilation of mineral deposit records for the ARDF database and, secondarily, tor the developing National mineral resource database. The contractor is expected to maintain contact with mineral industry sources. Tasks include: searches to acquire needed new data; plotting of acquired site locations on topographic maps or alternatively providing location data digitally; creation of descriptions of new mineral occurrences and revisions of existing records in order to maintain the currency of the ARDF database. Ultimately, the tasks include creation of new records as well as update of existing records. All of these efforts require adherence to database standards and the use of mandated software (supplied). RFQ is expected to be issued O/A 21 Jun 2013.
