- Description
- CoNNECT Technology Available for Licensing UT-Battelle, LLC, acting under its Prime Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the management and operation of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking a commercialization partner for a software tool that can help consumers manage their energy consumption. The ORNL Technology Transfer Office will accept licensing applications through August 16, 2013. Citizen Engagement for Energy Efficient Communities (CoNNECT) is a community-based computational framework that enables consumers to benchmark their consumption against that of their peers. CoNNECT builds on the premise that energy consumers need to go beyond one-time improvements that are often not monitored to increase the likelihood of achieving energy savings. By tracking energy usage data, including smart meter data from the utilities as well as property and spatial data from county government offices, CoNNECT provides an improved energy feedback mechanism that informs households in more detail about their consumption pattern so they can achieve better awareness and control, which in turn motivates them to conserve. CoNNECT's web-based feedback application uses GIS- (Geographic Information System) based approaches to identify a consumer's peer group for energy usage comparison. The application provides consumers with possibilities for saving energy through sharing best practices. Potential CoNNECT users include utility companies, government agencies, consultants, energy consumers, and sustainable energy technology developers and providers. CoNNECT was originally developed using federal funds and selected for further development under the laboratory's Technology Innovation Program (TIP). TIP supports technology development using royalties from existing technology licenses to accelerate the market readiness of high potential technologies. License applications will be evaluated based on prospective partners' ability and commitment to successfully commercialize the technology, with a preference for United States based businesses and small businesses. If a license is executed, the ORNL researchers developing the technology will be eligible to compete for additional TIP funding to further advance the technology.
