- Description
- The Association of State & Territorial Public Health Nutrition Directors (ASTPHND) is a 501 C 3 non-profit national organization representing state nutrition directors and public health nutrition professionals working in Maternal Child Health (MCH), chronic disease prevention, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, WIC, obesity prevention and other related programming. Members are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five territories. ASTPHND's members are uniquely positioned in state health agencies to provide leadership within all programs to improve or maintain optimal nutritional health of populations and targeted groups. This is done via direct management of programs; partnering with stakeholders and colleagues to address the nutritional needs of vulnerable women, children and families. ASTPHND is the only organization that specifically focuses on MCH nutrition at the national level and has national MCH council devoted to addressing the needs of the maternal and child health population including people served by the MCH Block grant. The MCH Nutrition Council is committed to addressing nutrition and physical activity related to the prevention of obesity and related chronic diseases through focused efforts with the MCH populations. The Council also has a single point person in every state health agency in the country who addresses Title V nutrition MCH issues. Through its unique network of public health nutritionists, ASTPHND connects to nearly 2,200 state-level nutrition professional and over 10,000 nutrition personnel in local communities working to improve the health of the American population through statewide and local community efforts. ASTPHND has extensive experience in providing quality training and professional development opportunities related to the implementation of public health nutrition programs and the translation of public health nutrition research to practice that is critical to leading state efforts to build capacity for MCH services and resources. ASTPHND has a long established reputation as the predominate group that addresses the needs of public health nutrition within the nation. ASTPHND is the only organization that has the necessary membership, links to stakeholders and other contacts, and the credibility to accomplish this project.
