Description
The Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) provides laboratory space and equipment to conduct research on overcoming challenges related to the interconnection of high penetrations of renewable energy systems into the electricity grid. NREL is offering the use of its unique capabilities within ESIF. Unique Capabilities + Hardware-in-the-Loop at Megawatt-Scale Power: Megawatt-scale power-in-the-loop allows utilities, researchers and manufacturers to conduct integration tests at full power and actual load levels in real-time simulations and evaluate component and system performance before real-world deployments. + High Performance Computing Data Center: Petascale computing at the High Performance Computing Data Center enables unprecedented large-scale modeling and simulation of material properties, processes, and fully integrated systems that would otherwise be too expensive, too dangerous, or even impossible to study by direct experimentation. + Uniquely Connected: Each lab in the ESIF has its own niche with different kinds of equipment and functionality fostering research on all aspects of energy integration. The Research Electrical Distribution Bus, the ultimate power integration circuit, is made up of two AC and two DC ring buses that connect multiple sources of energy and interconnect "plug-and-play" testing components in all the labs. + Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System: Integrated throughout the ESIF, a SCADA system monitors and controls the Research Electrical Distribution Bus operations and safety and gathers real-time, high-resolution data for collaboration and visualization. + Data Analysis and Visualization: Analysis and visualization capabilities at the ESIF go beyond what is found in a typical utility operations center. Fully integrated with hardware-in-the-loop at power capabilities, an electrical distribution bus, a SCADA system, and petascale computing, the ESIF allows researchers and NREL partners to visualize complex systems and operations in a completely virtual environment including utility system planning and operations. While the focus of this partnering opportunity is for demonstrating cost-effective and reliable solar generation integration in real time, at utility-scale, in successful utility business models, these capabilities can be applied to the development and demonstration of a breadth of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. Background Utilities (Investor-owned, Federal utilities - such as power marketing associations, Municipals, and Cooperatives) have a growing need to become more familiar with the various issues that could arise under high penetrations of renewables (especially solar), test ways to handle these issues, and use these results to develop and incorporate specific processes and tools into the mainstream utility power system operations to handle high penetrations of renewables. NREL, through ESIF's advanced hardware testing and modeling capabilities, can help utilities assess the potential levels of penetrations and impacts of these penetrations at specific locations within a utility's service territory. Through the development and testing of realistic and spatially and temporally accurate renewable penetration scenarios, utilities can develop a clear plan and timetable for incorporating methodologies to operate the power system in real-time with high renewable penetration under various system conditions Entities interested in utilizing NREL's capabilities or in partnering with NREL in response to relevant solicitations and Federal Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) should contact the point of contact provided below. For entities responding to solicitations/FOAs, NREL's services (including any required cost share) must be included in the applicant's proposals. Point of Contact: For more information please contact Dr. Martha Symko-Davies: Phone: 303-384-6528, Martha.Symko.Davies@nrel.gov; ESIF Website: http://www.nrel.gov/esi/esif.html
