- QUESTION: The 350 L/S turbo molecular pump has a nominal 8" diameter inlet port. Pumping at high vacuum is greatly enhanced with an unobstructed "line of sight" between the pump inlet and the vacuum chamber. It would be good vacuum design practice to include a min. 6" diameter to max 8" diameter access hole in one of the thermal shroud plates to enhance the pumping speed of the turbo pump. Can I assume that in addition to the 12" X 12" opening for the solar test unit in the shroud wall plate I can also include the 6" to 8" diameter opening for the turbo pump inlet and one small 1" diameter opening for the vacuum measurement gauges? ANSWER: Yes, you may assume that in addition to the 12" X 12" opening for the solar test unit in the shroud wall plate you may also include the 6" to 8" diameter opening for the turbo pump inlet and a small 1" diameter opening for the vacuum measurement gauges.
