Description
NASA/KSC has a requirement for a quantity of 100(one hundred) Rocket Triggering Spools for the initiation of cloud to ground lightning. NASA/KSC intends to purchase the items from Santa Fe Textiles/Thermax. Santa Fe Textiles is the only known vendor to date who has been able to consistently provide spools for rocket triggered lightning that meets the following requirements: The conductor shall be 700 meters of 32 gauge - 132 (.008 inch) bare copper wire wrapped with 200 denier kevlar cord and wounded on a 5 inch diameter plastic cylinder of 3.25 inches in length. The cylinder wall thickness shall be of 3/32 inches or less. The wire end on the outside of the spool shall be covered with a red silicone coated fiberglass sleeve. ID M3190/6 (.133 inch diameter.) The spool shall withstand an initial thrust of 267 Newton and a peak thrust of 332 Newton. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications to perform the effort in writing to the identified point of contact not later than 4:30 p.m. local time on August 1st 2012. Such capabilities/qualifications will be evaluated solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and open competition basis, based upon responses to this notice, is solely within the discretion of the government. Oral communications are not acceptable in response to this notice. All responsible sources may submit an offer, which shall be considered by the agency (Tyronza.Borden@nasa.gov).
