- Description
- This is a notice of intent to go Sole Source in accordance with FAR 6.302-1 to Microwave Telemetry for 10 PTT-100 5 gram solar PTT Burrowing Owl Transmitters. This transmitter unit is specially designed for burrowing owls, with a shorter antenna mounted at a 45 degree off-back angle and a raised solar-panel platform. Microprocessor controlled battery charging; duty cycle timer; temperature and battery voltage sensors; up to two years operating lifetime; one-year warranty against electronic failure. Microwave Telemetry has been supplying miniature Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTTs) designed especially for tracking migratory birds with the Argos satellite system since 1991. In 1994, they converted the electronic module to a hybrid circuit that weighs only 3.5 grams and, along with new batteries, allowed them to produce PTTs that weighed less than 30 grams. The 5 gram PTT is the smallest satellite tag for tracking birds available anywhere in the world. The only other US company that makes solar-powered PTT tags is North Star Science and Technology, but the smallest units they make are 9.5 grams. These tags are too large for use on burrowing owls.
