- Description
- This project consists of maintenance and repair work to the exterior of Brett Hall, Building 114, Coasters Harbor Island CHI. Also included are the addition of brick pavers and general repairs to the surrounding building site. Brett Hall was built in 1942. It is approximately 32,735 square-feet in area configured in three stories including a basement, first and second floor level and partial attic. The building features a hip roof with asphalt shingles and brick masonry exterior walls with wood dormers, porches, and trim. The building is used as administrative and conference space for Naval Station Newport. Interior areas of Building 114 will be occupied and remain in use during construction. Brett Hall is considered an historic structure. It is a contributing element within the Coasters Harbor Island Historic District. It is also eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Any proposed changes or alterations to this building must be submitted to the State Historic Preservation Officer for review. If the submission is determined to have no adverse effect on this historic property, then the Navy obtains this in writing from the State Historic Preservation Officer and may proceed with development and completion of a Categorical Exclusion in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. If any submission is determined to have an adverse effect by either the Navy or the State Historic Preservation Officer, then a Categorical Exclusion is not applicable and an Environmental Assessment would need to be completed in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act.
