- Description
- The primary purpose of this stewardship project is to reduce the risk of falling trees which could pose a health and safety risk to the public, forest employees, firefighters and other forest users. A secondary purpose is to reduce hazardous fuels along road corridors to aid in suppression and evacuation route operations. The vegetation in the project area is dominated by a lodgepole pine ecosystem with a mountain pine beetle population that has been at epidemic levels. Other vegetation types may be treated based on the need and resource objective. Treatment areas would be located along approximately 85 miles of road corridors on the district. Actual treated stands would include approximately 287 acres of National Forest System lands that may be treated through a variety of tree removal methods. This project will remove or fell hazardous trees and/or treat hazardous fuels in these areas affected by the mountain pine beetle epidemic on the Sulphur Ranger District of the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests. The environmental analysis describes the activity as removing hazard trees "within a distance of 110% of the height of the tallest tree, locally hazardous trees from the edge of National Forest System Roads (NFSRs) open to public travel and state and county roads that cross the Sulphur Ranger District of the Arapaho & Roosevelt National Forests." Activities may include hand treatments, mechanized ground-based logging activities and/or cable logging to remove dead, insect-infested trees or other vegetation considered to be hazardous fuels and/or a threat to public and employee safety. In most instances, removal of felled trees or biomass by the contractor would be required. Where logging equipment operability is difficult or impossible, treatments would involve hand treatments. Fuel loading objectives would be met by treating activity fuels or other vegetation by cutting, lopping and scattering, chipping, masticating, or piling. In almost some cases the contractor will have the option of removing biomass.
