- Description
- Solicitation for Offers - Solar Photovoltaic Project at the Durango, Colorado Site The Durango, Colorado, Disposal Site is a 40-acre uranium mill tailing disposal cell located on a 120.6-acre site near the City of Durango. The disposal cell is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) under the provisions of a general license issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The Vanadium Corporation of America processed uranium ore at the Durango mill, which was located ¼ mile southwest of Durango, for the U.S. Government national defense programs from 1949 to 1963. From 1986 to 1991, as authorized under Title I of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act, DOE removed tailings and other tailings-contaminated materials from the mill site and adjacent properties and located and stabilized them in a disposal cell in Bodo Canyon located 3½ miles southwest of the town. DOE is beginning the process of soliciting offers to lease the area on the cover of the disposal cell and several flat areas surrounding the cell for a twenty-five (25) year period, to a private entity for the purpose of installing, operating, and maintaining a photovoltaic (PV) solar electrical power generating system. The available land is expected to support a system of approximately 4.5 megawatts, which is enough energy to power about 1,000 homes.
