- Description
- The Walla Walla District plans to evaluate the post release performance of natural and hatchery Clearwater River fall Chinook salmon. The 2008 National Marine Fisheries Service Biological Opinion calls for an evaluation of the effectiveness of transportation for improving survival of the Endangered Species Act listed Snake River fall Chinook salmon. In October 2007, a regionally developed comprehensive fall Chinook Transportation Consensus Research Proposal was finalized, "Evaluating the Responses of Snake and Columbia River Basin fall Chinook Salmon to Dam Passage Strategies and Experiences". The Consensus Research Proposal identifies the need to evaluate the post-release performance of natural and hatchery Clearwater River fall Chinook salmon. This study will determine the post-release performance and feasibility of using hatchery fall Chinook salmon as suitable surrogates for Clearwater River natural fall Chinook salmon. To determine the feasibility of using hatchery fall Chinook salmon as suitable surrogates, US vs. OR parties must agree to provide sufficient numbers of hatchery production fall Chinook salmon for the study. The US vs. OR case closed in 1978 and legally upheld the Columbia River treaty tribes (Nez Perce, Umatilla, Warm Springs, and Yakama) reserved fishing rights. The US vs. OR parties' managed production fall Chinook salmon must be reared, have a Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag injected, and then released into the Clearwater River at a size comparable to natural Clearwater River fall Chinook salmon. Natural Clearwater River fall Chinook salmon must be collected, PIT tagged, and released into the Clearwater River to evaluate post-release performance.
