NIDDK has tested over 100 analogs of the lead compound and have identified three compounds that they need to have synthesized in large amounts to continue testing in animal models. The goal of this research is to develop a drug that can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with thyroid cancer. Three analogs of a lead compound (and the lead compound) will be synthesized and the four compounds tested in animals to determine which is the best to include in an Investigational New Drug application to the Food and Drug Administration. Although the structure of the lead compound has been published, the three new analogs have not been published and third structures will be kept confidential. The protocols for synthesis of these compounds are available and have been successfully tested in small batch syntheses. The animal test protocols have been established and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
