The IRP has established a tradition of excellence, with a strong focus on long-term, high-risk research, investigations into the genetics and pathophysiology of human disease, and the development of innovative therapies for a number of serious disorders for which satisfactory treatments previously did not exist. The program is firmly grounded on a foundation of world-class basic science research and technology within the NIAMS IRP itself, widespread collaborations with other outstanding intramural clinicians and scientists on the Bethesda campus, and immediate proximity to the largest clinical research hospital in the world.
