- Description
- Market Research Summary February 07, 2011 Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRIs) VA San Diego 1. Purpose: To establish commercial availability and potential source for the use of Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (3T GE MR750) for the purpose of research 2. Method: a. Researched equipment needed b. Conducted Internet and local search c. Justification d. Posted Sources Sought Notice 3. The research requires the latest technology specifically for research, GE MR750s. According to General Electric Healthcare there are only two of these in the San Diego area and both are at UCSD. On 12/20/11, Carl L. Linsz, Regional Product Manager of MR equipment from General Electric Healthcare, was contacted in order to get the most up-to-date information. According to Mr. Linsz, the are only two GE MR750s south of Camp Pendleton. Also, the Center for Functional MRI is the ONLY research fMRI center within walking distance from the VA Hospital. 4. Internet search in the local area for the specific FMRI equipment that will fulfill the need. There is one additional MRI facility at UCSD's Sorrento Valley location which is dedicated to research only. However, the MRI is 1.5 Tesla, providing lower quality scans. A review of all major academic centers in the San Diego area was conducted. None of these institutions has an MRI; in fact, all of the scientists wishing to conduct MRI research locally go to the UCSD Center for Functional MRI for their services. The institutions contacted were San Diego State University, The Salk Institute, The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology, and the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. This was also confirmed on 12/20/11 with Carl L. Linsz, Regional Product Manager of MR Equipment from GE Healthcare. He has first-hand knowledge of all research-use MRIs in San Diego. Also, the Center for Functional MRI is the ONLY research fMRI center within walking distance from the VA Hospital 5. A notice was posted on FBO to look for alternative sources and inform the public of this sole source contract. No response was received providing the ability to offer this service. Conclusion: The market research was thorough accordingly a sole source will be given to University of California San Diego (UCSD) for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRIs) for research.
