Description
The T-AKE Class vessels are presently plagued with a serious stern tube bearing wear issue that seriously affects the operation and reliability of the entire propulsion chain. These vessels were constructed by general Dynamics NASSCO under NAVSEA contract and delivered to MSC operation. To date, four of the 10 operating ships have succumbed to stern tube bearing failures. MSC technical (N7), MSC Norfolk N43C, NAVSEA, and the propulsion chain OEM (Wartsila) are working diligently to identify the root cause of these failures and a permanent fix, however owing to the complexity of these ships and the propulsion chain components, a permanent fix has yet to be identified and validated. Validation of a permanent fix may not be possible for many years, assessed through modification, monitoring and operation. Notwithstanding MSC requirements for use of OEM authorized technical representatives for critical shipboard equipment and systems, use of the OEM for the propulsion chain onboard the T-AKE vessels is critical to support the ongoing evaluation work. The USNS PEARY is undergoing an emergency dry-docking in Trieste, Italy due to a C-4 CASREP on ship's stern tube assembly. The requested parts and services are critical to the successful repair of T-AKE Class stern tube and re-installation of ship's propeller and related systems. The propulsion system for the T-AKEs was designed and integrated with ship construction by Wartsila. Wartsila has sole possession of proprietary design data, material specifications, and components dimensions for shafting system components including thrust bearing, line shaft bearing, stern tube bearing, and tail shaft including tail shaft liners.
