- Western Hemisphere Course Chair Solicitation Your professional services are requested to serve as the Western Hemisphere Area Studies Regional Chair. Work will be performed at the Foreign Service Institute, 4000 Arlington Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22204. Area studies courses are designed to teach people how to work effectively in the countries and cultures to which they are assigned. The Western Hemisphere Regional Chair's responsibilities include coordinating one Advanced Area Studies course that typically meets for a half day each week and one Intensive Regional Area Studies Course that is offered multiple times a year in two week increments per offering. Both Advanced Area and Intensive Regional Area Studies Courses include the following types of activities: lectures, discussions, participatory activities by class members, readings, and audio-visual materials in order to highlight the key historical, political, economic, and socio-cultural themes for the region as well as American interests and policy issues there. Advanced Area Studies schedules are closely related to concurrent language training.
