Description
Description of Work to be Performed: Work will generally consist of replacing select manholes, subdrains, and observation risers in addition to the installation of 8 relief well outfall pipes adjacent to the powerhouse switchyard area at the downstream toe of the Garrison Dam near Riverdale, North Dakota. Current groundwater levels are influenced considerably by upstream pool conditions and will require both engineered dewatering systems and shoring systems for construction. Phase I shall consist of the replacement of approximately 300 lineal feet of 12-inch perforated vitrified clay subdrain and riser pipe, and all ancillary work, located at the base of the North Powerhouse Slope. The replacement will require 10-12 foot deep excavations into saturated sands. The Contractor will be required to design and install temporary shoring and dewatering systems to establish a dry work area, prevent caving of sands, and protect the adjacent foundation soils supporting a road and an engineered cut slope currently situated on either side of the proposed excavation. Phase I work will also require the installation of a manhole and replacement of a section of paved concrete gutter and catch basin. Phase II shall consist of the replacement of 3 manholes and approximately 160 lineal feet of 12-inch perforated subdrain and all auxiliary work, within the Powerhouse Relief Well Drainage System. Eight (8) previously constructed replacement relief wells, installed in 2010, shall be connected to the new manholes via outfall pipes using approximately 165 lineal foot of pipe. Work will also include the abandonment of existing relief wells and the removal of the former collection system in this area. The replacement will require 8-10 foot deep excavations into saturated sands. The Contractor will be required to design and install temporary shoring and dewatering systems to establish a dry work area, prevent caving of sands, and protect the adjacent foundation soils supporting the existing engineered cut slopes that are situated on either side of the proposed excavation. A considerable amount of information from previous boring programs and recent piezometer observations are available for the Contractors use in their design of the temporary dewateraing and shoring systems. Interested parties should email their capabilities packages to donald.d.miller@usace.army.mil NLT 2:00 PM CST, 23 Jun 2011.
