Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seeks to continue development a set of implementation guides that use the Health Level Seven (HL7) Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) standard for reporting healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) from healthcare facilities that use vendor infection control surveillance applications to CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). The NHSN is a web-based information system designed for the purpose of improving patient and healthcare personnel safety. The principal goal of the NHSN is to improve safety by creating and disseminating knowledge necessary to detect and respond to current and emerging healthcare safety threats. The public health importance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has prompted an increasing number of States to enact laws requiring hospitals to report HAI data to the health department or another State agency. In 24 States that have enacted mandatory reporting requirements as of June 2011, state statutes or implementation plans call for hospitals to report HAI data to the health department or another State agency using the NHSN. The number of healthcare facilities participating in NHSN has more than tripled since then, primarily because of the increasing use of NHSN by States in their implementations of HAI public reporting mandates. A substantial additional increase in NHSN participation is anticipated as more States enact mandatory reporting requirements and opt to use NHSN to implement their new mandates. In addition, the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid's use of NHSN for the IPPS reporting of Central-line Assoicationed Bloodstream and Surgical Site Infection events. Award of an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) type contract IAW/FAR Part 12 is being contemplated.
