- Description
- This amendment answers questions that several vendors have asked in response to the combined synopsis solicitation. "Three (3) Translators, (English, Spanish, Portuguese)" Question: Please provide as many details as possible about the type of documents that these translators will be expected to work with. Answer: Military to Military (predominately) directives/slides/coorespondence pertaining to the UN Peace Keeping Operation simulation going on. Question: Please indicate the anticipated daily workload for a translator. For example, a professional translator can typically translate 2,000 words per day. Price by hours not by quantity. Question: Can you confirm that they will only be required to translate into their native language? For example, the English translator will be presented with texts written in Spanish and/or Portuguese and will provide a written version of the same in English. Answer: This is the probable scenerio, cross translation is not mandatory, Question: Do you have examples of materials that will require translation? Answer: intial docs will be provided approximately one week out for review (if available) translation starts before the conference starts. Generally, slides, memos, and operation type orders (these are generally simulations for the exercise) Question: Do you anticipate the workload being distributed evenly between the three translators (i.e., there is a similar amount of work for each language combination)? Answer: The majority is Portugese and English with Spanish being a near third, so similar but impossible to precisely answwer at this time. "Three (3) Simultaneous Interpreters" Question: It is important to distinguish between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation. Simultaneous interpreting requires the interpreter to sit in a booth wearing a pair of headphones and speak into a microphone; the interpretation is delivered to the participants via a transmitter. During consecutive interpreting the speaker stops every 1-5 minutes (usually at the end of every "paragraph" or a complete thought) and the interpreter then steps in to render what was said into the target language. Please confirm that what you require for this conference is simultaneous interpreting. Answer: Yes simultaneous. Question: Professional simultaneous interpreters always work in pairs, alternating every 30 minutes. However, your requirements stipulate just one interpreter per language. If this project requires simultaneous interpretation (as defined above) into English, Spanish and Portuguese, then we would highly recommend having two interpreters per language. It is unrealistic to expect one simultaneous interpreter to work alone for an 8-hour day. Answer: The requiring activity does feel that the quantity of interpretation being rendered requires pairs. The previous conference held in Brasilia in November 2010, used only three interpreters. Question: Please provide as much detail as possible about the type of interpreting to be performed. Answer: Introductions, executions, and wrap up interpretations. For example: after groups make decisions, they will converge on a conference room to annouce current situations, execution of events that have happended and will happen. Equipment Question: The solicitation document stipulates "Two person soundproof booths as required" - Are you able to specify how many of these booths will be required? Presumably, if there are 3 languages for interpretation, you will need 3 booths for the duration of the conference. Answer: We require two, as only two persons will speak at anyone time. With at least two two person booths.
