Description
As part of on-going medical informatics initiatives within the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA is investigating the potential to re-define the existing VistA and Electronic Health Record (EHR) software and associated architectures as part of an open source software development community. Health Informatics and Information Technology leadership from across the Department, as part of an Enterprise Architecture Summit conducted in September 2010 met to discuss how the Department's future EHR would: -Serve as the lead in, and foundation for, the dialogue among VA product developers, other Federal agencies, the health care IT industry, and the Open Source Community; and -Offer additional advanced features, design, to be implemented in phases, and take full advantage of newest development techniques to minimize cost and maximize innovation. A report summarizing the discussions relative to necessary actions related to VistA and EHR enterprise architecture functional and technical requirements and governance needed for VA stand-up/participation in an open source software development environment is available at the Virtual Office of Acquisition (VOA) web page for VistA/EHR Enterprise Architecture at https://www.voa.va.gov. Industry and academia, especially those currently operating in open source environments, are encouraged to review this report in preparation for upcoming market research and request for information notices relative to prospective acquisition activities related to this initiative. Please be advised this notice does not constitute a request for proposals and no information is requested at this time. Please direct any questions to Kevin Loesch, Contracting Officer, kevin.loesch@va.gov, 732-578-5487 or Matthew Ginty, Contract Specialist, matthew.ginty@va.gov, 732-578-5459.
