- Description
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention intends to issue a sole source purchase order to Emory University Genomics Center, 615 Michael Street, Room 335, Atlanta, GA 30322, for high throughput genetic sequencing of poxviruses. The statement of work is as follows: Background and need: the CDC Poxvirus Program, as a Poxvirus Reference Center for the World Health Organization, is tasked with the creation and maintenance of genomic sequences for poxvirus species. This library of genetic sequences provides for the more rapid identification and response of poxviruses isolated from naturally occurring outbreaks or in the case of malicious intentional release. The vendor who performs this requirement must have a demonstrated and unique ability to obtain these genomic sequences from sampled material provided by the CDC, which can then be used for the development of a genetic reference library for poxviruses. Project objective: the vendor will use samples provided by the CDC pox program to generate whole genomic poxvirus genetic sequence libraries. These libraries will be sequenced using the Illumina or other high throughput sequencing technology to provide raw sequence. The sequence information will be filtered and analyzed to provide knowledge about the experimental questions specific to each sequence. The analyses and raw sequence data will be provided to the CDC for storage and further analysis. Scope of work: this work will involve the use of newly developed technologies to produce a reference library of poxvirus genetic sequences. The CDC pox program will provide the vendor with sample material which will be used to generate whole genomic sequences. These sequences will then be provided to CDC for storage and analysis. Technical requirements: the vendor will receive sampled material from the CDC pox virus program and will utilize high throughput deep genomic sequencing methodologies including the Illumina system, to produce clean whole genomic sequences. These whole genomic sequences will then be provided to the CDC Pox program. This project will require sequencing technology that provides high redundancy, ie several fold coverage of the genomic sequence of interest. Additionally, preliminary assembling will be conducted so that each individual sequence is received as a contiguous data string. Special considerations: the vendor’s laboratory must have a demonstrated ability to successfully work with the large poxvirus genome (which is up to 10 times larger than that of other viruses). Vendor must have knowledge and skill combined with a proficiency with the high throughput technologies. In addition, Poxvirus Program laboratory equipment and software is optimized for compatibility with Ilumina system. Deliverables: the vendor will begin to deliver whole genomic sequences to the CDC poxvirus program starting in early fall and continuing through late winter. This will include up to 100 genomes from submitted poxvirus samples. The data must be of sufficient quality to be used for immediate analysis by the pox program. CDC believes that this requirement is met by only one provider. This procurement will be processed under the authority of FAR 6.302-1 and 6.302-2. Only one responsible source and no other sources will satisfy agency requirements. No solicitation is being issued. Interested persons may identify their interest and capability to respond to this requirement. This procurement is not set-aside for small business. For contractual questions contact Linda M. Young.
