- Description
- This publication serves as notice of intent to procure service from the University of Washington for the US Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Marine Fisheries Service for: Specific Technical Services Specifically this project will address the following tasks: Evaluate the effects of photoperiod, nutrition, and water temperature on the conditioning of pinto abalone broodstock in a supplementation hatchery program. These three component factors are the likely primary controls on broodstock conditioning during the husbandry process. The 40 adult abalone that have been maintained as hatchery broodstock for two years will be divided into eight tanks and four duplicate treatment groups, which include: (1) Abalone reared indoors with artificial light (14h light:10h dark) and fed macroalgae (Nereocystis/Palmaria); (2) Abalone reared indoors with artificial light (14h light:10h dark) and fed dry formulated artificial feed; (3) Abalone reared outdoors (natural light cycles) and fed macroalgae (Nereocystis/Palmaria); and (4) Abalone reared outdoors (natural light cycles) and fed dry formulated artificial feed. These groups will be compared to duplicate control groups of abalone not hatchery conditioned but collected ripe at the beginning of the spawning season. After reaching 1000 degree-days (i.e., after 3-4 mo) in each treatment, broodstock will be visually observed to rate gonad development. The standard visual gonadal index is an ordinal scale of 0-3. Abalone designated with a gonad index of 2 or 3 will be selected for induced spawning. Evaluate differences across the five treatment groups by characterizing the following: (1) Visual Gonadal Index (an ordinal scale of 0-3); (2) Successful induction of gametes during a spawning attempt (binary, yes/no); (3) Number of eggs produced during a spawning event; (4) Diameter of eggs (a metric of "egg quality"); (5) Fertilization success (% of eggs that develop into "normal" embryos). When compared across treatments, these parameters will determine if differences exist between conditioning strategies that include different photoperiods and nutritional regimes and which strategy may be most successful in promoting efficient spawning efforts in the hatchery. Collect a minimum of 16 individual wild abalone (e.g. 6 male, 10 female) that will be selected and returned to the hatchery to serve as the control group in the above tasks. Wild adult pinto abalone with a gonad index of 2-3 will be retained. To maintain adherence to the ultimate restoration goal, wild broodstock should not be collected from aggregations of abalone. Rather they should be selected from reproductively isolated individuals separated from conspecifics by several hundred feet. This group will also be monitored for gonad ripeness and induced to spawn immediately following arrival at the hatchery. Successful hatchery methods developed during the proposed study will be communicated to managers along the West Coast Region, as these methods may have transferable application to all West Coast abalone species, including the two other abalone Species of Concern and two abalone species that are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. As part of this effort to open communication among hatchery managers, the Mukilteo abalone hatchery manager will travel to Southern California to exchange technical knowledge with managers at a number of abalone culture facilities (e.g. The Abalone Farm, Inc-Ray Fields manager; Proteus SeaFarms - Tom McCormick manager; and others) to share culture strategies and learn successful methodologies implemented by other researchers. Report and document findings. The contractor will compile all research background, methods and results into a comprehensive written report detailing all phases of analysis, results and potential future applications of project findings. DELIVERABLES The following shall be provided to the Northwest Fisheries Science Center: Final report. Final report will include description of methods and analyses performed with sufficient detail that all work performed could be repeated without extensive consultation with original contractor. PERFORMANCE Place of Performance -- Work will be completed primarily off-site, with occasional on-site visits. Period of Performance -- All products to be delivered to the NWFSC when completed, but no later than: December 31, 2011. Point of Contact - Rick Gustafson from the NWFSC will be the point of contact for the for questions, review, and acceptance of submitted work, he can be reached at 206-860-3372. The point of contact will be responsible for task coordination and assessment. Authority for sole-source purchase is 41 USC 253 (c) (1) only one responsible source and no other source will satify agency needs. This notice of intent is not a request for competitive proposals. However, all proposals received within 15 days of this publication of this synopsis will be considered by the government. All responses must be in writing and may be faxed attention Melvin Fondue at (206) 527-7166 or email at melvin.n.fondue@noaa.gov.
