Description
GENERAL INFORMATION: The Hydrodynamic Facilities and Engineering Department (Code 51) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) is requesting information from available sources regarding a pending upgrade to an existing wind tunnel motor drive. BACKGROUND: The 8x10 Sub-Sonic Wind Tunnel (8x10) facility is located at the NSWCCD site in West Bethesda, MD. Operation of the tunnel is accomplished by driving a 16 ft diameter fan using a 1000 horsepower wound-rotor induction motor (WRIM). Operation of the WRIM fan motor is via a "Clymer-Type" drive system. This system recovers the slip energy from the WRIM via slip rings on the rotor to generate output power. Clymer Drive: The layout of the Clymer Drive is as follows: the slip rings of the WRIM are directly connected to the synchronous motor of a variable speed synchronous motor/dc generator set. The dc generator of the variable speed set is connected to a dc motor of a constant speed dc motor/synchronous generator set. During start up, the constant speed set is started, and the fields of the dc machine are driven to bring the variable speed set up to synchronous speed. When the variable speed set reaches synchronous speed, the fields of the variable speed synchronous motor are applied, generating fields on the WRIM rotor through the slip rings. The incoming line is then closed to the stator of the WRIM and the motor begins running. At zero rpm, the magnetic fields in the rotor and stator of the WRIM are rotating at the same frequency, essentially chasing each other around the motor. To increase the speed of the WRIM from zero, the fields are adjusted on the dc machines to slow the speed of the variable speed synchronous motor. This in turn slows the fields of the WRIM rotor, causing it to spin. WRIM: Specifications for the motor are listed below: NAME PLATE DATAMake: GE Model: 8023325Frame: 579-Y Type: MVolt: 2300 Amp: 2203 Phase Sec. Volt: 935 Sec. Amp: 550Cyc: 60 Spd Full Load: 8101110/1000 HP Serial #: 5632847 SOURCES OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Furfari, F.A.. "The Clymer Drive System". IEEE Industry Applications Magazine Nov/Dec 2006: 8-10 Weiss, Herbert W. "Adjustable Speed AC Drive Systems for Pump and Compressor Applications". IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Vol. 1A-10, No. 1 January/February 1974: 162-167 INFORMATION REQUESTED: NSWCCD requests information regarding availability of COTS products and/or design/build services for the replacement of the current drive system in the 8x10. NSWCCD is interested specifically in a solid-state slip power recovery drive or equivalent that will drive the existing WRIM without modifications to the motor - i.e. shorting the slip rings, etc. The system must also include a contactor or remote electrically controlled breaker for applying and breaking the 2400 VAC line to the WIRM stator. The drive must allow the speed to be controlled remotely via a 0-10 V or 4-20 mA signal, and must also be controllable from the front of the drive. Tolerances should be +/- 1% or better on the drive output frequency through the full frequency range.Information submitted should also include a rough-order-of-magnitude estimate of the cost to upgrade the existing wind tunnel motor drive. The information may be submitted not later than 06 August 2010 to the following address or email: Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock DivisionCode 5104: Yelena Bargman9500 MacArthur BoulevardWest Bethesda, MD 20817-5700yelena.bargman@navy.mil No contract will be awarded as a result of this Sources Sought Notice. The requested information is for planning purposes for the Government and does not constitute a commitment, implied or otherwise, that a procurement action will be issued nor will the government pay for the information solicited.
