Description
NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) participants are encouraged toattend the NASA Europa Jupiter System Mission (EJSM) Instrument Workshop July 26-29,2010.The Instrument Workshop is sponsored by National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationLocation: Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City, CaliforniaRegister at: http://opfm.jpl.nasa.gov/InstrumentWorkshop/ Abstract submission deadline June 28, 2010. Registration deadline July 21, 2010. Hotelreservations should be completed by June 25, 2010.For workshop related questions, email ejsm.workshop@list.jpl.nasa.gov For SBIR related questions, email carol.r.lewis@nasa.gov or kimberly.e.graupner@nasa.govPurpose: The NASA Langley Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) office encouragessmall businesses with capabilities that mitigate high radiation environment risks andtechnologies that support planetary protection to attend the 4th Europa Jupiter SystemMission (EJSM) Instrument Workshop on July 26-29, 2010 in Universal City, California. The EJSM Workshop is an event organized by NASA and ESA to cover programmatic andtechnical aspects related to the EJSM mission for the instrument and business community. The SBIR office will attend the workshop and will be presenting information for smallbusinesses interested in responding to related topic areas within the upcoming NASA SBIRand STTR solicitations that would also be of great interest to the instrument community. The EJSM is a joint NASA/ESA mission to study the Jupiter System and its diverse Galileansatellites, utilizing two flight elements. NASA is planning to build a robust radiationtolerant spacecraft, Jupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO), to study the Jupiter System and itsmoon Europa. ESA is planning a similar spacecraft, Jupiter Ganymede Orbiter (JGO), tostudy the Jupiter System and its moon Ganymede. The Jovian magnetic field isapproximately twenty (20) times larger than that of Earths. The radiation environmentfor the JEO baseline mission concept is estimated at 2.9 Mrad total ionizing dose (TID)behind 100 mil thick aluminum. This level is seven times greater than any previous NASAmission. The baseline ten (10) year mission requires that all electronic components behardened to a minimum of 100-300 kRad. The radiation challenges and long-duration demandstate of art spacecraft and design capabilities. In order to assure mission success, thespacecraft must not only be radiation hardened, but also sterilized and remain so forplanetary protection. The research and development areas that EJSM seeks to reducemission risks are the following: radiation effects in parts, materials and sensors;spacecraft charging; planetary protection methods; instrument sensors and components;operational complexity; radioisotope power source; and mission lifetime. Two classes will be offered as part of the workshop: a tutorial on the Jovianenvironments, and Planetary Protection considerations for instrument development. Thisworkshop will provide relevant information to potential instrument teams who intend torespond to the Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for EJSM instruments that is expected tobe released in 2011. It will also provide information to small businesses interested inresponding to related topic areas within the upcoming NASA SBIR and STTR solicitations.
