- Description
- Recovery - This notice is provided for information purposes only. NASA LaRC awardeda fixed-price contract to Boeing Inc. entitled Integrated Methods to Enable the DetectionPrediction Mitigation-Management of Aging-Related Hazards. This competitive action isfunded in its entirety by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). This awardresults from a competitive selection under the National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration (NASA) Headquarters released NASA Research Announcement (NRA) forfoundational research in support of the Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate(ARMD),entitled Research Opportunities in Aeronautics (ROA) 2009 under NNH09ZEA001N,Amendment to Appendix B.2 Aircraft Aging and durability Project (AAD1) (Recovery Act). The Aircraft Aging and Durability (AAD) project is part of the Aviation Safety Program.AAD project focuses on aging and damage processes in recently designed and certifiedaircraft, rather than life extension of aircraft which have been in production for manyyears. The AAD project emphasizes new and emerging material systems and fabricationtechniques as well as the potential hazards associated with aging-related degradation(process resulting in reduction of material or structural quality). The AAD project goalis to take a proactive approach to identifying aging-related hazards before they becomecritical, and to develop technology and processes to incorporate aging mitigation andmaintenance into the design of future civilian and military aircraft. The project isorganized relative to three themed areas: detect, predict, and mitigate. The purpose ofthis contract is to support NASA LaRC in research related to the study of system levelconcepts (concepts that view the process as a whole, instead of addressing one part ofthe process without regard to how changing that part will impact the other parts of theprocess) and specific mitigation concepts for improving the material and structuraldurability for transport fuselage structures. The research focus area for this contractis to develop system-level concepts for implementing advanced capabilities to transportfuselage structures in real-world operational environments.
