- Description
- NASA/GRC has a requirement for EBC Bond Coat Development for SiC/SiuC CeramicMatrix Composites. In this project, NASA will utilize Ceramatecs proprietarypolymer-derived functional graded coating technology and expertise, and incorporate NASAdeveloped low conductivity and SiC nanotube (SCNT) technologies, to develop highstrength, and high temperature capable ceramic bond coats for advanced turbine engineapplications. The specific tasks are listed as follows:1. Use the Ceramatec developed polymer-derived, ceramic coating approach to developprocesses for 5 bond coat compositions for SiCf/SiCm CMCs, consisting of composite oxidesand silicates, using a NASA four component low k oxide composition(ZrO2-Y2O3-Gd2O3-Yb2O3) and silicon source from the precursor. Work will include materialpreparation, coating application, and coating densification. Microstructuralcharacterization will be performed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of processingconditions.2. Incorporate submicron SiC reinforcements from the precursor into one of the compositebond coats.3. Incorporate NASA processed SiC nanotube reinforcements into one of the composite bondcoats.4. Test the coating strength for all five bond coated CMCs (flexural tests) at roomtemperature, instrument using strain gauge and/or acoustic emission to detect onsetcoating failure.5. Test the coating strength for all five bond coated CMCs (flexural test) at elevatedtemperature (1400C or 1500C).6. Provide 30 coated SiC/SiC disc coupons (1 or 2 diameter discs, 6 specimens for eachbond coat).Suggested Milestones for This Project:M1. Identify processing conditions to apply uniform thickness coatings of each bond coatcomposition, free from defects, on SiCf/SiCm samples.M2. Test room-temperature strength for all five bond coated CMCs (flexural tests).M3. Test high-temperature strength for all five bond coated CMCs (flexural tests) at atleast 1400C.M4. Provide 30 coated disc coupons (1 or 2 diameter discs, 6 specimens for each bondcoat) to NASA Glenn Research Center.Deliverables D1 Final report on results of process development, microstructural characterization, andmechanical testing.D2 30 coated disc coupons (1 or 2 diameter discs, 6 specimens for each bond coat).NASA/GRC intends to purchase the items from Ceramatec, Inc. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12 and the SimplifiedAcquisition procedures set forth in FAR Part 13. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications to perform theeffort in writing to the identified point of contact not later than 4:30 p.m. local timeon June 25, 2010. Such capabilities/qualifications will be evaluated solely for thepurpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis.A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and opencompetition basis, based upon responses to this notice, is solely within the discretionof the government.
