- Port Operations has 12 piers throughout NAVBASE SD area that has 483 synthetic log camels affixed to the quay walls and pier berths to protect the quay walls and piers from damage. These synthetic log camels were installed in FY 04 for the support both 'Home Ported' and 'Visiting' ships in the San Diego area. Due to normal wear and tear, many of the attaching fasteners, eye bolts, chains, hawse pipes and counter weights have become deteriorated through normal movement of the tides and have failed. The failure of the chains has allowed many of the synthetic log camels to break free from there intended positions and become adrift causing a serious hazard to navigation for ships and small craft alike. Failure to conduct regular maintenance, repair or replace the supporting hardware, and reinstall the synthetic log camels will lead to more costly damage to the quay walls, piers and potentially ships as a navigational hazard. The replacement of the worn and failing supporting hardware and reinstallation of the synthetic log camels is a critical requirement to ensure the safety of all vessels afloat.
