There are many compounds in environmental samples that are present at higher concentrations than the PFTs and thus interfere with their detection. Such compounds include SF6, nitrogen oxides, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The uniquely designed sampling and analytical process currently used by the BNL Tracer Technology Group includes methods to eliminate these compounds from the samples. Thus, the BNL analytical method and customized instrumentation currently in use is capable of measuring the atmospheric background of these compounds, i.e., down to the low parts per quadrillion (one part in 1015) levels. The current system is designed to analyze samples collected on Capillary Absorption Tube Samplers (CATS) and Brookhaven Atmospheric Tracer Sampler (BATS). This requisition is to solicit proposals for the development of a new system that will duplicate or exceed existing performance capabilities and be compatible with the current instruments and include state-of-the-art components, control systems and operation. Specifically, this work will result in the development of a custom gas chromatograph (GC) system built on one of the commercially available PerkirI-Elmer GC platforms with an Electron Capture Detector (ECD) that is compatible with TotalChrom chromatography software currently used by the BNL Tracer Technology Group.
