- Description
- NASA/JSC is soliciting information about potential sources for SPACE SUIT SYSTEM(SSS) VISOR MATERIALS. Information on optically clear base materials (rigid orflexible) and coating systems that can provide improvements in scratch-resistance andhydrophobia/fog-resistance is being sought. A material system, meeting new materialrequirements would be further evaluated for use in the next generation helmet visors. The current Extravehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA) consists of a transparent protectivevisor, a sun visor, and sun shades. The transparent protective visor in the front of theEVVA is polycarbonate. The sun visors base material is polysulfone. Both the protectivevisor and sun visor have ultraviolet and infrared (UV/IR) coatings layers on the insidesurface of the helmet. The EVVA materials are required to meet mission performancerequirements when operated in a large variety of environments. These environments includeexposure to fungus, humidity, ozone, salt fog, thermal radiation, solar ionizingradiation, sand/dust, random vibration, sinusoidal vibration, acceleration, shock, pressure, temperature, atmosphere, micrometeoroids/orbital debris, solar ultraviolet, andatomic oxygen. Requirements related to material systems include refractive power limits, haze limits, and allowables for minor visible distortion or optical defects.Transmittance ranges are specified in the UV, luminus, and IR spectrum regions, toaddress visibility and UV protection. Thermal/optical coating characteristics includingtransmittance, front reflectance, and back reflectance are called out for the sun visorand protective visor. Applicable documents can be viewed at:http://procurement.jsc.nasa.gov/NNJ10ZBH001L/Suit-Visor-Requirements-MARKET-SURVEY-revisions.docx This document is for information and planning purposes and to allow industry theopportunity to verify reasonableness and feasibility of the requirement, as well aspromote competition. Prospective offerors are invited to submit written comments orquestions to: Adrian Clayton at adrian.d.clayton@nasa.gov, no later than March 05, 2010.When responding reference NNJ10ZBH001L.Comments may be forwarded to Adrian Clayton via electronic transmission or by facsimiletransmission. This presolicitation synopsis is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government, nor will the Government pay for the information submitted in response.Respondents willnot be notified of the results. An ombudsman has been appointed -- See NASA Specific Note "B".The solicitation and any documents related to this procurement will be available over theInternet.
