- Description
- Opportunity: Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), operated by Sandia Corporation under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, is seeking an industrial partner or partners to commercialize SNL's thin-film thermal battery technology and to jointly participate in the development and scale up of the technology to industrial levels, optimize final design and manufacturing parameters, and provide manufactured prototypes for test and evaluation. SNL has developed a thin-film coating approach as an alternative to conventional powder processing techniques employing pellet presses in the manufacture of thermal batteries. The approach developed is applicable to low-cost manufacturing of thermal batteries for the DOD and DOE/NNSA market and has a number of technical advantages over conventional approaches. In addition to the coating technology, SNL is investigating alternative approaches to insulation and packaging that further reduce cost, weight, and volume. It is anticipated that this alternative manufacturing approach, when commercialized, will lead to reduced manufacturing costs and alternative designs that offer higher performance and increased flexibility for DOD and DOE/NNSA customers. Sandia is seeking partnerships with one or more industrial partners with proven experience in thermal battery manufacturing. Partners will collaborate with Sandia on the continued development and testing of the thin-film thermal battery, and provide a clear path to commercialization through refined product design, optimization for manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and related commercialization issues. Qualified partners will contribute resources, including staff and facilities toward this collaboration, and will be expected to enter into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), and license Sandia's intellectual property. At the conclusion of the collaboration, partners will offer products for sale using the approach to DOD and DOE/NNSA markets that may result from federal procurements. Companies interested in partnering with us on thin-film thermal batteries should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company name and address; 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact; 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology, in response to the description provided above. For more business and licensing information, please contact Laura E Santos, ph (925) 294-1214, fax (925) 294-1339, email: lesanto@sandia.gov. Please respond by email or fax no later than March 23, 2010, at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 9290, P.O. Box 929, Livermore, California 94551 Sandia is a multi-program laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration under Contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.
