Description
THIS POSTING IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.NASA/GSFC has a requirement for The Goddard Mission Support Services Contract at theGoddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel onClimate Change reiterated that clouds remain the largest source of uncertainty inprojections of future climate change. Current climate models are still far fromrealistically representing clouds. Progress in improving the representation of clouds in the models will be accelerated byutilizing remote sensing observations in combination with cloud-resolving models toevaluate models and better understand cloud processes.U.S. climate modeling groups donot have the resources and expertise required to analyze large multi-year satellitedatasets or to run their own cloud-resolving model simulations. The ARRA tasks include the application of software that isolates weather and climatevariations due to two of the most important types of variability observed in nature, theEl Nino Southern Oscillation and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, to various satellitedatasets. The analyses of the satellite data will be posted online, along with thesoftware required for the modeling groups to produce similar analyses of their ownclimate models, thus facilitating model-data comparisons that will highlight modeldeficiencies and provide targets for future model improvement. The ARRA research also includes the production of atmospheric structure and circulationdiagnostics from cloud-resolving model simulations. For global modeling groups that donot have access to a cloud-resolving model, these results, also made available online, can be used to test hypotheses about cloud processes that can lead to parameterizationimprovements that can be implemented in a global climate model. This research supports the NASA mission to better understand the Earth system and enhancethe nations ability to predict future climate change.Tasksa. Produce and make publicly available, monthly mean ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation)anomaly gridded fields for a variety of multi-year datasets as well as the software forpost-processing calculation of ENSO anomaly fields in general circulation models.b. Produce and make publicly available, a multi-year database of 3-hourly gridded ISCCP(International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) weather state classifications for thetropics, along with diurnal cycle and MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) composites andCloudSat-CALIPSO GEOPROF-Lidar composites for each weather state and MJO phase.c. Produce and make publicly available, sampled 3-D dynamic and thermodynamic fields forWRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model cloud-resolving deep convection simulationsover land and ocean.NASA/GSFC intends to incorporate an additional category into the Annual Mission Forecastfor contract NNG06HX21C with Sigma Space Partners. Cost Plus Award Fee Contract No.NNG06HX21C was awarded to Sigma Space Partners on June 27, 2006, on a competitive basis. The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12.
