- Description
- NASA/GSFC has a requirement for the NASA Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS)which enables scientists to increase their understanding of the Earth, the solar system, and the universe by supplying state-of-the-art high performance computing, storage, network, and application solutions. To accomplish this mission, the NCCS provideslarge-scale compute engines, analytics, data sharing, long-term storage, networking, andother very high-end computing services designed to meet the specialized needs of theEarth and space science communities.NASA researchers in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and the GlobalModeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) will be using the NCCS computational systems forclimate simulations as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)assessment of climate change. The resultant datasets will be made available to theworldwide climate research community using a distributed data portal known as the EarthSystem Grid (ESG) developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratorys (LLNL) Programfor Climate Model Diagnostics and Intercomparison (PCMDI). The ESG consists of twocomponents or nodes, the Gateway node and Data nodes. The Gateway Node, at LLNL, willprovide the entry point to all IPCC data for users. Data Nodes will be located at many ofthe computing centers and will contain the data as well as analysis tools to assistscientists access the data they desire, including the new Data node that we are buildingat GSFC. The Data Nodes will be connected to the Gateway Node thru the Internet. Climate Scientists will use the NASA data, as well as data generated by approximatelytwenty computing centers, in performing their scientific research. The entirety of thisresearch will be collected, reviewed and analyzed by the IPPC and they will publish anoverview report titled The Fifth Assessment Report Climate 2013 which is referred to asAssessment Report No. 5 (AR5).This task, using ARRA funds will install, integrate, test and manage the ESG Data Nodesoftware as provided by PCMDI at the NCCS at GSFC. The project will also publish GISS andGMAO IPCC AR5 datasets through the ESG as they become available. NASA/GSFC intends to award a new Task 23 under Contract No. NNG06HX04C with ScienceApplications International Corporation (SAIC).Cost plus award fee Contract No.NNG06HX04C was awarded to SAIC, on December 28, 2005, on a competitive basis. This notice is provided for informational purposes only, in accordance with the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act.The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12.See Note26.An Ombudsman has been appointed.
