Description
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management & Operating Contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting information from prospective offers to provide: An X-Ray tomography unit for imaging the interior structure of large diameter geologic drill cores. The tomography unit should be able to accommodate core samples of at least 10 cm diameter and core length of at least 30 cm. The tomography unit must be a fully integrated package consisting of at least an X-ray generator, focusing mechanism, sample translation capability, detector and data acquisition, analysis, and visualization software. The system must come with a shielded enclosure. Ideally the integrated system should provide spatial resolution on the order of 100 microns on a 10 cm diameter core and while also providing maximum dynamic range, at a minimum of 16 bit. The data acquisition software should be able to accommodate multiple detector types including linear array and image plate. Acquisition times should not exceed 24 hrs for a single core 30 cm in length. Types of geologic cores will vary from semi-consolidated sedimentary rocks with basalt, granite, and arkosic siltstone pebbles and cobbles in a matrix of sand, silt and clay to intact basalt rock. Analysis of the pore structure connectivity is of primary importance. Additional integrated instrumentation to enhance or highlight the pore structure will be viewed favorably. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI.
