- Description
- SAIC-Frederick, on behalf of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), announces its intent to publish, before the end of 2009, a solicitation for Tissue Source Sites for collection of normal human tissues. This solicitation will be issued as part of the NCI cancer Human Biobank (caHUB) initiative in support of the National Institutes of Health's Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project. Contracted Tissue Source Sites will be expected to collect multiple tissues from the same individual (autopsy and/or surgery) and to enroll at least 50 donors over an 18-month period. In addition, proposals should include a small qualitative study of the consent process and impact of the GTEx project on donors and families. caHUB is a new initiative being developed by the NCI Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research. Through an advanced network of tissue acquisition, biorepository operations, pathology review, and bioinformatics capabilities, caHUB will develop the high quality, clinically annotated biospecimens that are essential resources to accelerate the development of molecular-based diagnostics and therapeutics for personalized medicine. Additional information about caHUB may be found at http://www.cancer.gov/recoveryfunding/page10. Normal human tissues are essential to the study of cancer and other diseases. The GTEx project, a NIH Roadmap initiative (http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/GTEx/), aims to provide a resource to the scientific community with which to study the relationship between genetic variation and regulation of gene expression. This project will analyze multiple human tissues from donors who will also be characterized for germline genetic variation through dense genotyping. caHUB will acquire normal tissues for the GTEx project through contracts with rapid autopsy programs and medical examiner programs, as well as plastic and transplant surgery programs.
