- Description
- The Ship to Shore Connector (SSC) is an Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV), and is a future Navy craft for transporting vehicles, cargo, and personnel from ship-to-shore. It is the planned replacement for the current Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) as these craft reach the end of their service life. The SSC will provide high speed, over the horizon, heavy lift capability to transport personnel, equipment, and material for the United States Marine Corps' Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) as established for year 2015 and beyond. The SSC will have the ability to operate in the well decks of U.S. Navy amphibious ships, operate in planned amphibious and Maritime Prepositioning Force (MPF) ships, operate over beaches, ice, mud, and marsh areas, operate in inland regions, ascend a beach gradient of 5 degrees from standstill, and transport a cargo load of approximately 74 short tons. The SSC will have capability and performance similar to, or exceeding that of, the craft completing the LCAC Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). The Navy plans to have a SSC industry day on December 8, 2009 to provide a program overview, the Functional Baseline Design of the SSC Program, and to provide an overview of the TDP, to facilitate better understanding of the Navy's requirements and encourage industry comment.
